why i wrote this book

I've been a professional musician for more than 50 years and during that time I've met hundreds(maybe thousands)of people who tell me they "tried music but it was too hard".

I ask them if they were taught to read notation and invariably they say "yes". Then I ask if they sang as a child and again, invariably they say "yes". It was the process of learning to read that threw them off. Notation is an important skill if a person wants to play music professionally in an orchestra but it isn’t necessary for anyone who just wants to play the songs they love, and jam with friends. In fact, there are many millions of musicians in the world who play music masterfully and professionally but do not read music.

I felt there was a need for a way to teach music to those folks who don’t want to “read notation”.

I believe everyone should be able to participate in the joy of playing.
